Renewable Energy

Transitioning to renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, hydro, and biomass is crucial for reducing emissions and driving the global energy transition. However, in a shared grid system, it can be challenging to determine the origin of your electricity. That's where BlueSpark AG steps in.

We provide a solution to this challenge through our Renewable Energy Quota Certificates and Energy Attribute Certificates. Our Renewable Energy Quota Certificates help businesses meet regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance with renewable energy targets. On the other hand, our Energy Attribute Certificates allow organizations to achieve ambitious corporate sustainability goals

Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs)

Unveiling the Origin of Renewable Electricity

The electricity grid consists of a mix of renewable, nuclear, and fossil power sources, making it difficult for businesses to track the origin of their electricity and validate their renewable

How EACs work

When green power plants generate a unit of electricity – typically 1 MWh – and inject it into the grid, an EAC is issued. The certificate contains information like the production date, location, and technology. Consumers can then buy the certificate to claim unique ownership of the environmental benefits of renewable electricity, reducing their carbon footprint.

Why opt for EACs in business?

EACs validate your company's use of eco-friendly energy. They let you lessen your environmental effect in sync with your business goals, supporting green energy without altering your power source. EACs are pivotal for aligning with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, elevating sustainability metrics as per the Science Based Targets initiative, CDP and RE100 benchmarks.

  • The Guarantees of Origin (GOs) system is optional and utilized by enterprises, public entities, and families. The EU Renewable Energy Directive (REDII) mandates that power providers and users employ Guarantees of Origin to validate and declare green electricity usage in Europe.

  • I-REC is a recent global benchmark established in regions lacking a previous market structure, drawing insights from North American and European models. Now, I-RECs can be found in parts of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.

  • Nations like the UK, Poland, Australia, Japan, and New Zealand possess their own EAC frameworks. Occasionally, these domestic certificates can validate energy usage beyond their borders.

  • In the United States and Canada, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are granted. In the US, RECs serve dual purposes: regulatory compliance and elective use.
